Mythology:

This rune connects to the creation story of human beings.

". . . in Midgard near the sea, where they found two trees. To these already living beings Odin gave ond (spirit, the breath of life), Vili gave odhr (inspired mental activity), and Ve gave form, speech, and the senses."     (Runelore, 145)

Elements:

The first 8 runes are composed of the mysteries and tools that the student must learn how to use and master in order to progress along the path.  This is a rune of consciousness, not organic or inorganic matter.  It is hard to actually ascribe an element to it.
If an element can be associated with it, it's most likely Air: "the matrix for consciousness"
(Runelore, 150)

Spiritual/ Esoteric meanings:

This rune is Odin's rune. It is divine consciousness and represents wisdom through study, occult practice, and sacrifice.  (Handbook, 25)
This is language that is beyond simple words and sentences.  It is also symbols that represent ideas and spiritual truth.
This would be a good point to talk about The Left Hand of Odin, a book I was considering reading.  I have started it but have not gotten deep enough into it to really describe what the author's main points are in entirety.
The Left Hand Path is about personal ascension, evolving the god within.  Odin represents a divine being who traveled the road or pattern necessary to achieve self-transformation, ascension, and ecstasy.  This is the ecstasy of religious experience, when the divine is able to enter the mortal mind or body and speak through.  This could be possession, or as a result of working so closely with deity that one's consciousness has been elevated.  Given the transformative power that this rune points to, the elevation of consciousness is most likely on an active level.  Possession is a passive acceptance of this knowledge and doesn't always stay behind after the experience.
So Von List, Thorsson, and those who "work with" Odin, often see Odin as an archetype or a being who can show them the way to their own evolution towards becoming a god themselves.

This rune is also connected to the concept of Othala, through the link with our own ancestors.  If we are "children of the gods" then ancestor veneration and god worship are linked. Othala is a rune of sacred space, ancestry, and home.  We reach back to our ancestors, their energy, karma/wyrd, as much as we reach forward through our children and towards our own futures.

"This ecstatic concept that compliments the more stable institutional force of Othala." (Futhark,27)   If Othala is the home/temple in a social sense then Ansuz can be the personal, bodily temple.  Through the use of galdr, meditation, drumming, etc. One can vibrate the body and raise it's frequency to physically evolve the self along with the mind.

In short, Odin can show the way to the god-within because He has walked that path and the runes are the keys along the way.

Magickal Uses:

Transformation
Expression
Inspiration
Ecstasy
Death Mysteries

Final Meditations:

The runes Isa and Laguz are also present in this rune form.  Isa is the ice spoken of previously.  There are two strikes through it which breaks the ice allowing what is hidden and gestating to be revealed. Further, to allow what is dormant to germinate and grow upward.
Laguz is the rune of deep water.  In The Rune Poem, it is a stormy sea threatening to capsize the ship.  It is something to fear.  In other rune poems this water is a promise, something beautiful.  Water nourishes, water gives fish and food, water is a form of the deep subconscious or hidden powers within ourselves.  And like I said previously, Laguz looks like a closed mouth in comparison to Ansuz.  It is the hidden knowledge that must be released because if it is hoarded it harms both the person greedily keeping it and the community that lacks its enrichment.

           The Rune Poem:
Also seen in this poem are two Anglo-Saxon forms: Oak and Ash.
Oak is nature at its most useful.  Oak is the wood used by the English for boats, for building houses, daily fire logs, etc.  It is nature and nature's power harnessed for the enrichment of mankind.  Speech is also the power of breath harnessed for the betterment of people and community.
Ash is also a rune of nature in its useful form.  But it is a wood of strength often used in weaponry.  Straight and strong arrow shafts, straight and strong spears. It seems to represent the force of will, the strength of victory.

        3 Paths Through Midgard:

A brief summary of this stanze for the Ansuz rune, Power gestating and building in the mind- (sword in it's sheath could mean tongue locked inside the mouth)- by studying the universe and the soul we learn what we are made of.  Each answer leads to more questions.  Using galdr/chanting to increase the vibrational frequency toward evolution.
"So Behold! A god now rode the beast."
Intellectual and spiritual studies lead to wisdom and evolution.  This is the moment of ascendance or apotheosis.  The body is the "beast" in this equation.  And in this last line of the stanza, the god within has control of the beast, or the mind and soul now control the body.  This is a level of spiritual development many strive for, to be more than just another animal on the earth.
