Mythology/Spiritual Connections:

This rune has been connected to the Norns at the very beginning of time, at the moment cause and effect was born. Cause and effect contribute to the forming and shaping of layers of orlog that together create cosmic wyrd.  The need-fire is a force of resistance, friction between aspects of the psyche, not just between elements in the universe. This resistance is both a source of stress or distress, and a solution to distress. It is the friction from this resistance that creates the internal fire that can be channeled toward self-transformation.

                                                                                                       (Futhark, 38)
                                                                                                       (Runelore, 122)

The Eights:

        Row 1: Mysteries/Tools to learn
Row 2:  Trials and Tribulations / Conflicts and paths to success
Row 3: The realm where the student works                           (Runelore, 140)

In the row of tools for the students is Uruz and is the cosmic shaping power of the universe.  The focus of the energy is the strength to defend, as the Auroch in history defended it's territory.  The focus is on the self and what the self needs to survive, defend itself.

Nauthiz is in the row of trials or paths to success and is the internal fire, the force of will that needs to be stoked like a flame in order to fuel self-transformation.  It's connection to Uruz is primal.  One must know the difference between self and other, have the will to defend one's own needs and self-hood, before seeking to evolve to a new state of being.
Berkano is in the final row, the row of the environment for the work.  Berkano is a symbol of birth, of giving without losing the essence of the self.  It is the seed broken open, the power inside the enclosure is released to do its work.  This work is that of new creation, growth.

The relationship with Hagalaz has been previously discussed, that of the scouring hail storm seeding the ground for a change followed by Nauthiz, the will to manifest or the fire that feeds the next stage in the student's evolution.

After Nauthiz is Isa, the rune for using resources to solve difficult situations.  Ice can be protective; a hard shell to keep what is encapsuled safe, or the fish beneath the water insulated from the cold of winter.  It can also be destructive if not in balance with other forces like fire.

Final Thoughts:

3 Paths Through Midgard:

This paragraph continues the theme of Hagalaz as the call to war and the test of the individual's strength.   "The coward's life or family name?"   Despite the fear at hearing the call the individual has to decide what they are more driven by, to live a long life with a cowardly heart and die forgotten, or risk a short life on the battle field and possibly become one of the chosen for Valhalla.

Nauthiz is the moment of the need, the moment of the call.

The Rune Poem:

There is note in this stanza that some Christian ideas of mercy may have infiltrate the interpretation of this rune.  It is said to mean "hopelessness amid suffering"  but there is also mention of daring to hope.

Nauthiz could also be an imperfect Gebo, unequal exchange can bring about imbalance and suffering.
