Mythology/ Spiritual Connections:

Hagalaz is refered to as an ice-egg or a hail-seed.  It contained the crystal of power and the pattern of the cosmos inside its shell. This is the source of manifestation.

In another form it is the snowflake, which when enclosed in a seed circle becomes the Rune Mother.  This shape contains all of the rune forms and represents harmony and completeness.     (Futhark, 36)

The hail-egg contains cosmic fire and ice before it has been released to give rise to Ymir.  Ymir was the world's first sacrifice, when Odin-Vili-Ve cut him into pieces and created the mountains, earth, oceans, etc. to create the worlds.

The symbol of Hagalaz contains "the hidden form of perfection toward which all conscious shaping (creation) is directed".                                                                                    (Runelore, 121)

Elements:

Fire and Ice both apply to this rune.  Inside the hail-seed is both the explosive heat, expansion, proto-energy, and vibration of fire.  In balance with this the stillness, contraction, and proto-matter of ice.
                                                                                                                         (Runelore, 150)
In a previous post I described this as a sort of yin-yang wrapped around each other and cycling, but not mixing or diluting each others' force.

The Eights:

        Row 1: Mysteries/Tools to learn
Row 2:  Trials and Tribulations / Conflicts and paths to success
Row 3: The realm where the student works                           (Runelore, 140)

In the row of tools for the student to learn is Fehu. This rune deals with the flow of wealth in society.  In order for a society to be healthy, it must be balanced, and a constant ebb and flow of resources and wealth help feed the health of that society.  The same goes for energy.  During ritual and religious work energy needs to flow freely between individuals and between realms.

Hagalaz is in the row of trials or conflicts.  The rune poem portrayal of this rune on a surface level is like the weather, a harsh destroyer. A time of pain and conflict. But at it's deeper level, the scouring rain both brings it's own remedy and is a sign of evolution and balance. It is as if to say the student must weather the storm, make it through a harsh ordeal, before a significant transformation can occur. This rune also starts the second row, and so it could be seen as an initiatory rune to the second row.

In the row of the environment is Tiwaz.  This rune is about orderliness, justice, and the guiding force for the student.  It is part of the evolution connected to Hagalaz. In order to be successful in making it through the trial that the second row presents, cultivating an instinct for right order and keeping your eye on the goal is an important foundation.

In front of Hagalaz is Wunjo.  Wunjo represents a bringing together and balancing of elements or forces, such as people in a tribe, the necessities of life, and from this balance will come joy and prosperity.  It is easy for the student to want to rest here. Hagalaz ushers in a new period of evolution sometimes through destruction like hail destroying plant life.  But the hail stones will melt and feed the soil for new crops to grow.  The crisis or radical change is necessary to get the student moving again.

After Hagalaz is Nauthiz which represents cosmic friction.  This is a heat that comes from resistance and from that friction comes an internal fire.  This fire makes the student both aware of the need at the same time that it is a solution to that need which is the distress possibly presented by the crisis in Hagalaz.  These three runes in this order seem to indicate after physical needs are met, there will be a challenge for a deeper understanding of life and the self which may cause a crisis and put the student on the path to self-transformation.

Final Thoughts:

The Rune Poem:

In some interpretations of hail, it is seen as destructive and ominous in a bad way.  This stanza focuses on the promise of renewal and transformation afterward, when the ice melts.

3 Paths Through Midgard:

The first word in this stanza is "wyrd" and how it is "crashing" in.  This seems like the moment when all past action is catching up to the narrator.  There are still strong military references.  The second line implies that the narrator learned where the boundaries were, of self or the environment, because of the attack from outside. Warriors need a war like students need lessons/challenges.  This process brings change to circumstances and proves the hero.
